    Synopsis:

    Industrial Engineering concerns with the design, installation, and improvement of integrated systems of people, material, information, equipment, and energy. It draws upon specialized knowledge and skills in the mathematical, physical, and social sciences, together with the principles & methods of engineering analysis and design to specify, predict, & evaluate the results to be obtained from such systems. In this subject, the concrete principles and practical techniques to design, install, and improve the integrated system will be learnt.


    Course Outcome:

    At the end of this course, students should be able to:

    1. Point out the principles of industrial engineering in designing, installing, and improving an integrated system.
    2. Synthesize an integrated system of people, material, information, equipment, and energy in problem solving and decision making.
    3. Practice industrial engineering principles for continuous improvement.


  • Lesson 1: Introduction to Industrial Engineering

    Synopsis:

    This chapter briefs the history & development of IE, its definition, objectives, activities & future challenges of industrial engineers. This chapter also highlights the relationship of IE with other engineering disciplines. At the end of this chapter, employability of industrial engineers are also discussed.


    Expected outcome:

    At the end of this class, students should be able to:

    1. Explain the history & development of IE.
    2. Understand the general concepts of IE
    3. To gain insight into the future challenges of industrial engineers.
    4. Understand relationship of IE with other engineering disciplines.


  • Lesson 2: System-The focal point of IE

    Synopsis:

    This chapter briefs the system theory, components of system, and types of system. At the end of this chapter, system thinking theory will also be discussed.


    Expected outcome:

    At the end of this class, students should be able to:

    1. Understand the focal point of Industrial Engineering discipline.
    2. Describe components of system.
    3. Explain types of system
    4. Understand the concepts constituting the system theory.
    5. Apply system thinking in problem solving and decision making to improve production system.


  • Lesson 3: Organization & Manpower Management

    Synopsis:

    This chapter discusses the concept of organization and manpower management. First, the organization and management will be briefed. Subsequently, managing human resources in an organization will be deliberated.

    At the end of this class, students should be able to:

    1. Understand the concept of organization and management.
    2. Explain the concepts and applications of human resource management.

    Synopsis:

    This chapter briefs the general concepts of work study constituting methods study and work measurement to ensure the best possible resources in carrying out specified activity.

    2. Explain the steps involved in work study.
    3. Describe types of tasks/works.
    4. Understand the role of work study in improving productivity.

    Synopsis:

    This chapter discusses methods study used to analyze the movement of individuals or materials, activity of human and machines, and body movement.

    At the end of this class, students should be able to:

    1. Understand the objectives of methods study.
    2. Apply the concepts and tools of methods study to improve work methods.


  • Lesson 6: Work Measurement

    Synopsis:

    In this chapter, the general concept of work measurement will be discussed comprising standard time and work measurement techniques.

    At the end of this class, students should be able to:

    1. Understand the concept of work measurement and standard time.
    2. Apply the methods of determining standard time.
    3. Apply work measurement techniques.


  • Lesson 7: Ergonomics

    Synopsis:

    In this chapter, the concept of ergonomics comprising ergonomics for cognitive and physical tasks will be discussed. Subsequently, anthropometry, occupational biomechanics, and work safety will be explained.


    Expected outcome:

    At the end of this class, students should be able to:

    1. Understand the general concepts of ergonomics.
    2. Apply the concept of ergonomics in improving cognitive tasks.
    3. Apply the concept of ergonomics in improving physical tasks.
    4. Explain the concept of anthropometry and occupational biomechanics.
    5. Understand the concept of work safety.


  • Lesson 8: Designing Processes

    Synopsis:

    This chapter introduces the concept of designing production processes. The main considerations whether to buy the product from suppliers and to make it in house will be discussed. Four types of production processes along with the methods of selecting them will also be addressed. Subsequently, the techniques to analyze and design process will be presented. Finally, the concept of process innovation will be briefed.

    At the end of this class, students should be able to:

    1. Understand the concept of designing production processes.
    2. Distinguish four types of processes.
    3. Understand the concept of breakeven point analysis.
    4. Apply the techniques to analyze and design processes.
    5. To understand the concept of process innovation.


  • Lesson 9: Capacity & Facility Planning

    Synopsis:

    This chapter introduces the concept of capacity planning. Critical decisions in capacity planning are discussed. Subsequently, the concept of facility planning will be addressed along with techniques used to design the facility layouts. At the end of this chapter, line balancing techniques will be elaborated.

     

    Expected outcome:

    At the end of this class, students should be able to:

    1. Understand the concept of capacity planning.
    2. Explain two critical decisions in capacity planning (i.e., answer questions of when to increase and how much to increase).
    3. Understand the concept and objectives of facility planning.
    4. Understand three basic layout types (i.e., process layout, product layout, and fixed position layout).
    5. Apply the techniques in designing process and product layouts.
    6. Apply the concept of line balancing to smooth the production line.
  • Lesson 10: Aggregate Planning

    Synopsis:

    This chapter highlights the concept and strategies of aggregate planning. Methods for aggregate planning (i.e., graphical and mathematical methods) are explained.

     

    Expected outcome:

    At the end of this class, students should be able to:

    1. Understand the general concept and strategies of aggregate planning.
    2. Apply the graphical and mathematical methods to develop aggregate planning. 


  • Lesson 11: Material Requirement Planning

    Synopsis:

    This chapter introduces master production schedule (MPS) and material requirement planning (MRP). The concept of bill of material (BOM), gross material requirement, and net material requirement plan will be addressed. Finally, safety stock will be introduced.

     

    Expected outcome:

    At the end of this class, students should be able to:

    1. Understand the concept of MPS and MRP.
    2. Explain the concept of BOM, gross material requirement, and net material requirement plan.
    3. Develop MRP for a production process.
    4. Consider safety stock in developing MRP.


  • Lesson 12: Inventory Management

    Synopsis:

    This chapter elaborates the concept of inventory, its function and types. Subsequently, the principle of inventory management as well as costs of inventory will be introduced. Finally, the model of economic order quantity and reorder point will be addressed.

     

    Expected outcome:

    At the end of this class, students should be able to:

    1. Understand the concept of inventory, its function and types.
    2. Describe the inventory management principles.
    3. Apply the inventory management principles in managing inventory.
